Q&A Interview with Tom Bedford
With a personal best of over 3 hours it would take a brave man to accept a bet of £12,000 to run a marathon in under 2 hours 25 minutes but when you've had a few pints anything seems possible and Tom Bedford made that bet down the pub. It has to be said that Tom was an English Schools Champion and said some of the best running genes inherited from his father Dave Bedford but regardless of these facts the running community was split on whether he could do it. At the Dublin Marathon in 2009 Tom literally flipped across the line in a time of 2 hours 24 mins 10 seconds and in doing so won the bet and also raised £10,000 for charity. Tom later went on to beat that marathon time again - all be it with a little less pressure!
Tom is currently awaiting an operation on his toe but hopes to be back running again soon. He kindly took the time to answer our Q&A questions.
Name: Tom Bedford
Occupation: Race Director
Favourite Events: Marathon and distance events.
How did you first become in interested in athletics?
Knew of it through my dad but I was always a football guy as a kid until I started winning races and pursued it instead.
What is your best performance to date?
5.44 to win the 2k English schools steeple chase was my best performance but I did like my 2.19 marathon a couple of years ago.
What is your most important training session?
Hill sessions. If you want to be good, do them!
What is the most impressive/craziest training session you have ever known somebody complete?
My dad did 30 x 400m on the track off 1minute recovery in low 60's.
What are your goals for the next 12 months?
Ive got an operation in September on my toe so once that is fixed I will lose my puppy fat and get back into training and have another crack at a marathon.
What is the most memorable athletics event you have ever watched?
Super Saturday. Need I say more?
Which athlete do you most admire?
Anyone not using drugs and mixing it still. Ive got a soft spot for Aussie Collis Birmingham but that's because he is trying to look like my old man. Leo Manzano is up there as a good bloke and a great championship performer.
Where is your favourite venue that you have competed at?
Penn Relays. Amazing stadium and a lot of fun.
What is your favourite:
Book: Errol Fynn autobiography: My wicked wicked ways.
TV Show: The Colbert Report (American satirical political show)
Shameless Plug – Is there anything going on in your life that you would like to mention?
Richmond Running Festival - 10km and Half marathon - 22nd September. The start is the most beautiful one start in Europe. You get a free nike technical T-shirt, a free beer and cool medal. Places are filling up fast so get in whilst you can. Come and party after with local bands and great local food and drink.
Question from previous person to complete Q&A (Scott Overall) -
Would you rather be a professional golfer or a professional F1 driver. And why?
Golfer, your career is very long and you play in the sun all year round. Plus you won't be risking your life!
What question would you like to ask our next athlete to complete our Q&A?
What is the worst habit your friends say you have?
If your next race had to be done in fancy dress, what outfit would you choose?
I would go for a slimmed down Santa outfit and get a world record for the marathon. Good for a Bedford to reclaim a world record!
