Julia Bleasdale

Julia Bleasdale is the current British Champion at 5000m.

 

She is a regular competitor for Team GB and has competed in various locations across the world including Kenya and Japan.

Looking ahead for the year 2012, Julia aims to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games. On top of this she also wants to achieve a top 3 UK ranking in the 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m events and also defend her UK Championships title.

Yesterday Julia competed in the Carlsbad 5000 race. This world famous 5k race attracts the very best in the world and Julia impressively finished in 6th place (15:53) in windy conditions and was also the first European athlete to cross the finishing line.

Julia kindly took the time out of her training schedule to complete our Q&A interview:

How did you first become in interested in athletics?

My father was a runner and one day when I was about 6 years old I asked to join him on his run. It all started from there.

What is your best performance to date?

Representing Great Britain at the European Cross Country Championships and finishing 13th despite having a heavy cold.

What is your most important training session?

My long run; often undervalued it is the most important session of the week.

What is the most impressive/craziest training session you have ever known somebody complete?

I sometimes take a rucksack and run continuously 12 hours a day for 3-4 days through the Alps. Some people this that is pretty unique.

What are your goals for the next 12 months?

To achieve the Olympic A standards and to be selected to compete for Team GB.

What is the most memorable athletics event you have ever watched?

Zurich Golden League 2006; the last event to be held in the old stadium before modernisation. The atmosphere was electric.

Which athlete do you most admire?

Haile Gebreselassie. I have been fortunate enough to spend some time with him at his home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Where is your favourite venue that you have competed at?

I like running when there are mountains in view!

Film: I am not somebody who has a favourite

TV Show: I do not have time to watch much TV

If your next race had to be in fancy dress what outfit would you choose?

Anything that allows me to run fast!
